MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS :

Is there “any science” behind geomicrobiology and sampling techniques?

The AAPG Memoir 66 (1994) describes in detail geo-microbiology, seepage mechanisms, dynamics and design parameters. Relationships of specific microbes, populations or cross-plots vs. C1-5 and more recent R&D by AE&E company is patented and confidential. This is what distinguishes MGGE and 4D Integration from conventional geochemistry-only by competitors and gives our company a leading edge in the industry. Results over 10 years, ca. 100 surveys and 72 wells provide ample evidence of the technology and success rates - see graph below. Commercial discoveries (based on initial rates) were called by the clients, not by AE&E.

Are there any pitfalls?

From lookback studies, most inconclusive results (4 discoveries, 2 failures) were caused by sub-optimal survey objectives defined by the client, improper design or undersampling - see slide below, bullets 1-3. Another possible reason can be that calibration wells provided by the client were no valid ‘analogs’: e.g. a well declared ‘dry’ was never really tested or had deeper undrilled but HC-bearing objectives, which MGCE would also detect.  It is important that both client and company jointly discuss the available well data and the best survey design, which is most appropriate to meet the business objectives.
